Adding another room to your home can be a serious undertaking. There are a ton of different variables to align, in order to do the job properly. While you may have one set of necessary skills to get the job done, you may be totally lacking in another set of skills. This is why, before you hire a contractor or get into a serious undertaking, you need to think very carefully about whether this project is going to be worth the effort.

While adding another room to your home can end up being a great addition of value to you, it may only become useful in that regard if you want to refinance your home or sell it. While most people do end up selling their homes at some point in the future, this level of construction can end up adding ten percent to the total square footage while it takes an amount of money greater than twenty percent of your home’s total value. It can be extremely hard to recoup your costs when you sell.

The building trades tend to focus primarily on the technical aspects of building on a room. You have to add to and anchor the foundation all the way down, and then alter the structure of the roof so that your new room will be properly protected from the elements. As well, you need to add insulation and a heating duct to your new room. All of these additions cost money to do, and they bring no guarantee of adding much additional value to your home. The ultimate question is, do you want this new room?
